Sample Unit: Plan an Event

Instructor: Jerry H. Yamashita, M.Ed.
Content Area/Level:
  • Digital Literacy
  • Adult Learners
Lesson Title: Choose an Event
Objectives:
  • Research an event
  • Give feedback to someone else about their event
Introduction: In these lessons, you will think of a big event, like a birthday party, graduation, fundraiser, volunteer day, etc., that you would like to plan. For example, you might decide to choose “volunteer day” as your event. You will then brainstorm the tasks you will need to complete to ensure that your event runs smoothly.
  • What types of large events require a lot of planning?
  • Why would you create a plan to organize an event?
  • If you don’t have a plan before an event, what might happen?
Standards Addressed (ISTE):
1. Empowered Learner
1.a. Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
3. Knowledge Constructor
3.a. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.
3.c. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
6. Creative Communicator
6.b. Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
7. Global Collaborator
7.b. Use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints.
7.c. Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to work effectively toward a common goal.
Relative Advantages:
  • Allowing students to access content through an LMS-style portal gives them flexibility and control over when and how they learn.
  • Embedded videos allow for viewing, pausing, and rewatching of instruction which increases access to information for learners with varying challenges.
  • PBL-style curriculum places students into real-life scenarios and gives them hands-on experience with current digital tools.
Timeline: 50-75 min
Materials:
  • Video 1: Choose an Event
  • Video 2: Research Your Event
  • Video 3: Give and Receive Feedback
  • Video 4: Organize Your Event Plan
  • Video 5: Wrap Up Event Selection
Grouping Strategies: Each student will work with a partner, and each pair to a group of 4

  • Conduct an internet search to find at least 3 similar examples of your event. Include them in your plan and identify one thing you liked and one thing you disliked about the examples.
  • View Video 3
  • Share your event plan with your partner.
  • When your partner is ready, open their document.
  • Read your partner's event plan and add comments or suggestions.
  • Then, read the comments your partner left you.
  • Add a "Feedback" section to your event plan and record your partner's feedback.
  • View Video 4
  • Add headings and a table of contents to your event plan.
  • View Video 5
Assessment: Instructor will check in with each team to ensure that they understand how to open and label a new Google Doc. Students will give their partners one praise and one critique. Students will keep track of feedback for their Event Plan. At the end of the lesson, students will access a survey to self-reflect on their understanding of the lesson content.
